Manchester United
What went wrong this season? United's season started with a stutter and ended with barely a whimper as none of the players matched the enthusiasm on the pitch that manager Louis van Gaal demonstrated in his speech at the club's end of season awards. They have taken a step in the right direction after David Moyes' exit, but only a little one.
What comes next? Summer loan signing Falcao is on his way back to Monaco after contributing just four goals to United's total tally of 62 league strikes, their second lowest haul in the 23-year history of the Premier League. The search for a high scoring frontman is on.

Who have they been linked with? Harry Kane, but the Tottenham man says he is staying put. Van Gaal would be interested in Raheem Sterling but animosity between United and Liverpool makes any move deeply unlikely. If Gareth Bale is made available by Real Madrid, United would be prominent in the market.
Will they close the gap? No, unless they bring in a prolific and proven goalscorer. The squad is already strengthened by the addition of Dutch winger Memphis Depay from PSV but the likely exit of goalkeeper David De Gea would be a huge blow.
